This is an Austrian cap badge (Kappenabzeichen) from World War I (1914–1916). Cap badges were popular insignia among soldiers in the Austro-Hungarian army and were worn on field caps or uniforms. They served both as patriotic symbols and as memorials to significant events or people.
Cap badge identification:
The cap badge depicts Kaiser Wilhelm II of Germany (1859–1941), suggesting that this is a German-Austrian collaboration badge rather than a purely Austrian badge. Wilhelm II was the last German emperor and was a key ally of Austria-Hungary during World War I.
The years “1914–1916”
These years mark the first two years of the war, when Germany and Austria-Hungary were still having successes on the Eastern and Western Fronts.
Border and inscription:
The frame decoration includes oak leaves and iron crosses, symbols of military virtues and bravery.
The text “Gott mit uns” (God is with us) was a very common motto in the German Empire and was often used on military items, including belt buckles, medals and cap badges. This further strengthens the connection to Kaiser Wilhelm II and the German Empire during World War I.
