This is an Austrian World War I cap badge (Kappenabzeichen) depicting Emperor Charles I of Austria (Charles I), the last monarch of Austria-Hungary.
Motif: Profile portrait of Charles I, wearing uniform.
Text: “KARL I” inscribed on the right side of the badge.
Shape: Rectangular with a slightly curved bottom edge.
Attachment: Simple pin on the back, typical of early metal badges.
Material: Probably zinc or another cheap metal, common during wartime.
The pin on the reverse has been replaced and is not the original.
Historical context:
Charles I became emperor in 1916 after the death of Franz Joseph I.
He was a reformist leader and tried to get Austria-Hungary out of the war through peace negotiations.
The monarchy fell in 1918, and Charles was forced into exile.
