Description

Patriotic badge, Vienna city coat of arms

Double-headed eagle: Symbolized Vienna’s status as the imperial city of Austria-Hungary. The double-headed eagle was also part of the Habsburg imperial coat of arms.

Imperial crown: Above the eagle is the Austrian imperial crown, which shows the city’s historical connection to the Habsburg monarchy.

Shield with a white cross on a red background: This is the Vienna city coat of arms itself, a heraldic symbol of the city.

Use of this emblem:

This emblem was found on official documents, buildings and insignia of the Vienna authorities.

During the First World War (1914–1918), the symbol was sometimes used on military and civilian badges to show belonging to Vienna.

After 1925, the coat of arms was changed – the double-headed eagle was removed and only the white cross on a red shield remained.
