Belgium – Order of Leopold I, Knight, (first type with swords)

Description

The decoration was established on 11 July 1832 by king Leopold I and is awarded by royal decree.

The order was founded in four classes, now there are five and is conferred in three divisions (civil, military and civil).

Silver and white enamel Maltese cross with ball tipped finials, a silver-gilt and green enamel wreath of oak and laurel between the arms, on swivel crown suspension; the face with a central circular black enamel medallion with the gilt lion rampant of Belgium imposed encircled by a red enamel ring inscribed with the Belgian motto ‘L’UNION FAIT LA FORCE’ (Strength through Unity) within a beaded border; the reverse with a central black enamel medallion with the monogrammed gilt letters ‘LR’ for ‘Leopold Rex’ within a red enamel ring decorated with stylized lilies within a beaded border; on original ribbon. 

This is the first type and was made by J.G. Dutalis 1832-1844. Typically for Dutalis is the “Spanish” type of crown. The badge has some enamel damages; they are clearly visible on the pictures and comes with the faded, but original ribbon.
