Denmark – Medal for the Second Schleswig War, 1864

Instituted following the Second Schleswig War of 1864, this bronze commemorative medal was awarded to Danish military personnel and participants who served during the conflict between Denmark and the allied forces of Prussia and Austria. The war proved to be one of the most significant events in Danish history, resulting in the loss of the duchies of Schleswig, Holstein, and Lauenburg and marking a turning point in the development of the modern Danish state.

The obverse features a right-facing portrait of King Christian IX of Denmark, whose reign began during the turbulent events of 1863–1864. Surrounding the portrait is the inscription “CHRISTIAN IX KONGE AF DANMARK” (“Christian IX, King of Denmark”), with the engraver’s name appearing beneath the bust “Alphée Dubois”.
The reverse bears the simple yet poignant inscription “FOR DEELTAGELSE I KRIGEN 1864” (“For Participation in the War of 1864”), enclosed within a beaded border. The restrained design reflects the medal’s purpose as a token of service and remembrance rather than a decoration for specific acts of gallantry.
