DENMARK – War Participation Medal 1848–1850
(Minde-Medal for Deltagelse i Krigen 1848–1850)

Instituted on 26 June 1875 by King Christian IX at the suggestion of veterans of the campaign, this medal commemorates service in the First Schleswig War (1848–1850). Approximately 46,000 examples were struck in Paris and distributed in 1877 to surviving participants of the conflict.

The First Schleswig War began in March 1848 when German nationalists in the duchies of Schleswig and Holstein launched an armed uprising aimed at establishing an independent state. King Frederik VII of Denmark, who was also Duke of both duchies, responded by deploying the Danish army. The insurgents received military support from several German states, particularly Prussia. The conflict lasted three years until Prussia withdrew under pressure from the Great Powers, allowing Denmark to retain control of the duchies.

Circular bronze medal with laterally pierced ball and swivel bar suspension. The obverse bears the right-facing portrait of King Frederik VII, circumscribed “FREDERIK VII KONGE AF DANMARK” (Frederik VII King of Denmark), with the signature “ALPHÉE DUBOIS” below the bust for the French engraver and medallist Alphée Dubois (1831–1905). The reverse displays the dates “1848–1850”, surrounded by the inscription “FOR DELTAGELSE I KRIGEN” (“For Participation in the War”).

The ribbon is white with crimson stripes. The example illustrated retains its original suspension and shows an aged bronze patina with moderate wear consistent with age and service. The medal remains an important veteran’s award, linking its recipient directly to participation in Denmark’s First Schleswig War.

Condition: Fine to Very Fine; portrait and lettering slightly worn; original suspension intact; ribbon worn and faded.
