FINLAND – Commemorative Clasp for the Winter War and Continuation War 1939–1944

This ribbon device is not an official state decoration but a Finnish veterans’ commemorative clasp, produced after the Second World War for wear on veterans’ ribbons or commemorative displays. It commemorates Finnish service during the combined period of the Winter War (1939–1940) and the Continuation War (1941–1944) against the Soviet Union.
The clasp consists of a bronze-coloured metal plaque mounted on a ribbon of light blue with a central white stripe, reflecting the national colours of Finland. The design features a stylised warrior or guardian figure in profile above the dates “1939–44”, symbolising Finland’s defence during the wartime years. Above the figure is a small circular monogram incorporating the letters “AA”, associated with Finnish veterans’ organisations that sponsored a number of commemorative insignia during the post-war period.
Unlike official Finnish wartime medals awarded by the state, these clasps were generally acquired privately by veterans and worn as remembrance insignia at veterans’ gatherings, commemorative events, and patriotic ceremonies. They became particularly popular during the post-war decades as veterans’ associations sought to preserve the memory of Finland’s wartime sacrifices.

Very Fine; bronze finish showing light wear and oxidation; original ribbon clean and complete; reverse pin intact and functional. A desirable piece of Finnish veterans’ memorabilia commemorating service during the Winter War and Continuation War.
Historical Note
Between 1939 and 1944 Finland fought two major conflicts against the Soviet Union. The Winter War began with the Soviet invasion of Finland in November 1939 and ended in March 1940. The Continuation War followed from 1941 to 1944, during which Finland sought to regain territories lost in the Winter War. Despite overwhelming odds, Finnish resistance earned international admiration and became a defining chapter in Finland’s national history.
