Instituted on 6 August 1918, the Commemorative Medal for the Capture of Tampere was awarded to participants of the Battle of Tampere, one of the most significant engagements of the Finnish Civil War. Fought between 15 March and 6 April 1918, the battle resulted in the capture of the city by the White Army and marked a decisive turning point in the conflict. The victory at Tampere effectively broke the military strength of the Red forces in southern Finland and contributed substantially to the eventual triumph of the White side.

The decoration consists of a circular silvered medal superimposed upon a cross pattée and suspended from a distinctive ribbon of light green with yellow edge stripes bordered by narrow white stripes. The obverse depicts the bust of a White soldier wearing a peaked cap, holding a sword across his chest, with the arms of Tampere visible below. Surrounding the central design is a raised ring bearing the date “1918”. The reverse is plain and uninscribed.

The medal was awarded exclusively to members of the victorious White forces who took part in the capture of Tampere. As one of the earliest campaign decorations issued by independent Finland, it occupies an important place among Finnish Civil War awards. The battle itself was among the bloodiest engagements ever fought on Finnish soil and remains a defining event in Finnish military history.

Because eligibility was restricted to participants in a single campaign, the medal was awarded in comparatively limited numbers. It is therefore considerably scarcer than many later Finnish commemorative medals and is particularly sought after by collectors specializing in Finnish Civil War and early independence-period decorations. Examples retaining their original ribbon are especially desirable.

The medal stands as a tangible reminder of the struggle that shaped the newly independent Finnish state. Today it remains one of the most historically significant Finnish Civil War decorations, valued both for its rarity and its direct connection to one of the decisive battles of 1918.
