FINLAND – Commemorative Medal of the War of Independence 1918
(Vapaussodan muistomitali 1918 / Frihetskrigets minnesmedalj 1918)

Instituted on 10 September 1918, the Commemorative Medal of the War of Independence was awarded to members of the White forces who participated in the Finnish Civil War of 1918, known in Finland as the War of Independence. The conflict, fought between January and May 1918, followed Finland’s declaration of independence from Russia and culminated in the victory of the White Army under the command of General C.G.E. Mannerheim. The medal served as an official recognition of service during the struggle that secured the independence of the newly established Finnish state.

The decoration consists of a circular silvered medal suspended from a black ribbon with pale blue central and edge stripes. The obverse bears the crowned Lion of Finland from the national coat of arms, symbolizing the sovereignty and independence of the Finnish nation. The reverse features the Cross of Liberty, a central heraldic rose, and the date “1918”, commemorating the year of Finland’s War of Independence. Additional martial symbols, including weapons and military equipment, appear above the cross, emphasizing the medal’s connection to military service and national liberation.

The medal was awarded to soldiers of the White Army, members of the Civil Guard (Suojeluskunta), support personnel, and others who contributed to the White war effort. Several campaign clasps were authorized for specific battles and operations, although many medals were issued without clasps. The decoration became one of the most important commemorative awards of early independent Finland and remained a visible symbol of participation in the events of 1918.

As one of the first national medals issued by independent Finland, the award occupies a significant place in Finnish military and political history. It reflects both the sacrifices of those who fought in the conflict and the emergence of Finland as a sovereign state following centuries of Swedish and Russian rule.

Condition: Very Fine; original finish with attractive age patina; details and inscriptions well preserved; suspension intact; original ribbon showing age-related wear, fading, and minor fraying consistent with period issue and long-term storage.
