This medal is a commemorative medal dedicated to Emperor Wilhelm I of Germany. It was minted to honor him after his death and marks his importance to the German Empire.

Description of the medal:

Obverse:

Shows a portrait of Emperor Wilhelm I (1797–1888), the first emperor of the unified German Empire (1871–1888).

The inscription “WILHELM I.” and “KAISER VON DEUTSCHLAND” (Emperor of Germany).

Reverse:

Features a German imperial crown with rays above an inscription.

The text reads:

“IHM WAHRT GANZ DEUTSCHLAND FÜR ALLE ZEITEN EIN DANKBARES ANDENKEN.”

In English: “All Germany preserves for all time a grateful memory of him.”

Around the edge are the inscriptions “GEBOREN AM 22. MÄRZ 1797” (born 22 March 1797) and “GESTORBEN AM 9. MÄRZ 1888” (died 9 March 1888).

Historical context:

Wilhelm I was King of Prussia from 1861 and became the first Emperor of the German Empire in 1871 after German unification under Otto von Bismarck.

He died in 1888, marking the beginning of the so-called “Year of the Three Emperors”, when both his son Friedrich III and grandson Wilhelm II reigned in the same year.

The medal was minted as a patriotic memorial to honor Wilhelm I’s reign and importance to German unification.
