Description

This medal is a German veteran’s medal from the post-World War I period, probably from the Weimar Republic (1919–1933). The medal is characterized by:

  • Motif: A German steel helmet (Stahlhelm), which was a symbol of veterans’ organizations after the war.
  • Wreath: The oak leaf wreath around the helmet represents bravery, honor and tradition.
  • Suspension: A triangular enameled suspension with an oak leaf motif, which provides an aesthetic and symbolic connection to military awards.

This type of medal was often awarded by veterans’ organizations, such as “Der Stahlhelm, Bund der Frontsoldaten”, a paramilitary organization for German war veterans of World War I. The Weimar Republic was severely limited in its ability to award military awards due to the Treaty of Versailles, so veterans’ organizations created their own medals and insignia to honor their members.

The reverse of the medal bears the inscription:

“SOLL DEUTSCHLAND EINSTENS WIEDER AUFERSTEHEN, DANN HALTET FEST AN TREU UND EINIGKEIT!”

Which can be translated into English as:
“If Germany is to rise again one day, then hold fast to loyalty and unity!”
