GREECE – Order of the Redeemer, Knight (Silver Cross Class)

The Order of the Redeemer is the oldest and highest order of merit of modern Greece. It was established on 20 May 1833 by King Otto I following a decision of the Fourth National Assembly at Argos in 1829. The Order commemorates the liberation of Greece during the Greek War of Independence and remains the country’s premier state decoration. It has been awarded to Greek citizens and foreign nationals for distinguished service to the nation in military, diplomatic, public, scientific, cultural, and humanitarian fields.
Silver and enamel insignia in the form of a white enamelled Maltese cross surmounted by a royal crown and superimposed upon a green enamelled wreath of oak and laurel branches. The obverse central medallion bears the image of Christ the Redeemer, surrounded by the inscription «Η ΔΕΞΙΑ ΣΟΥ ΧΕΙΡ, ΚΥΡΙΕ, ΔΕΔΟΞΑΣΤΑΙ ΕΝ ΙΣΧΥΙ» (“Thy right hand, O Lord, is become glorious in power”). The reverse displays a white Greek cross on a blue field encircled by the inscription «Η ΕΝ ΑΡΓΕΙ Δ΄ ΕΘΝΙΚΗ ΤΩΝ ΕΛΛΗΝΩΝ ΣΥΝΕΛΕΥΣΙΣ – 1829» (“The Fourth National Assembly of the Hellenes at Argos – 1829”).
The ribbon is pale blue with narrow white edge stripes, reflecting the national colours of Greece. The presence of the royal crown indicates manufacture during the Kingdom of Greece, prior to the abolition of the monarchy in 1973 and the establishment of the Hellenic Republic.
The example illustrated appears to be a Knight’s Cross of the Order of the Redeemer. The silver crown and cross retain excellent detail, while the enamel work remains largely intact with only minor age-related wear. The original ribbon is present but faded and worn, with fraying visible on the reverse mounting.
Condition: Very Fine; silver insignia with light age patina; enamel largely intact; original crowned suspension present; ribbon faded and worn but complete. A fine example of Greece’s most prestigious order of merit from the royal period.
