Politikai Elítéltek Közössége Érdemkereszt (PEK – Remembrance Cross)

This award was established to honor those who were politically persecuted during the communist rule in Hungary, especially those who were imprisoned or repressed between 1945 and 1956.

PEK (Politikai Elítéltek Közössége) Community of Political Prisoners, was an organization for former political prisoners and dissidents.

The cross has the Hungarian coat of arms in the center and the inscription “PEK”.

The red, white and green ribbon represents the national colors of Hungary.

There are different variants of the cross (gold-plated, silver-plated and bronze), depending on the degree of recognition.

The medals next to it are still the 1956 Commemorative Medals, which reinforces the connection with the Hungarian Uprising and the fight against communism.

1956 Commemorative Medals

The two circular medals on the right are the 1956 Commemorative Medals. The medals were awarded to honor those who participated in the revolt against the Soviet occupation. The medal with a black ribbon indicates that it is awarded posthumously to a relative who has lost a family member.

On the front side are 1956, a sword and the coat of arms of Hungary, surrounded by a laurel wreath and stars.

Historical context:

These medals are strongly connected to the Hungarian Uprising of 1956, an armed uprising against Soviet rule in Hungary. The uprising began on October 23, 1956 and lasted until early November, when Soviet forces crushed the uprising. The medals were often later awarded to survivors and veterans of the uprising. It is a historically very interesting collection, especially for collectors of Hungarian resistance and veteran medals!
