Iceland – Order of the Falcon, Grand Cross (second type)

Description

The Icelandic Order of the Falcon was instituted on 3 July 1921 by King Christian X of Denmark and of Iceland. Iceland became an independent republic on 17 June 1944 and the statutes of the Order were revised on 11 July 1944, most notably the crown suspension being replaced by a fleur de lys. The order may be awarded to both Icelandic citizens and foreigners for services to Iceland and to mankind.  

Large gilt-edged white enamel cross clechée with squared ends to the arms, on fleur de lys suspension with loop for neck ribbon. The face with an oval central blue enamel medallion bearing a gilt Icelandic falcon, standing, wings outstretched, facing left. The reverse with an oval central white enamel medallion encircled by a blue enamel ring inscribed in gilt letters ‘SEYTJÁNDI JÚNÍ 1944’ (17 June 1944).  

The Star, an eight-point silver star of alternating smooth and faceted rays, the obverse with the badge in the center, the reverse features a dual pronged vertical pin, with the hallmarks KÁ 925S, Kjartan Ásmundsson, goldsmiths of Reykjavík.
