Description
The medal was instituted in 1954 and is awarded to both Icelandic citizens and foreigners for outstanding service to the President of Iceland.
Circular silver medal with loop for ribbon suspension; the face with the full-length figure of Ingólfur Arnarson holding an upright harpoon in his raised left hand, his right elbow resting on the dragon-head prow of a Viking longship, circumscribed ‘HEIDURSPENINGUR FORSETA ÍSLANDS’ (President of Iceland’s Medal of Honour). The reverse with the arms of Iceland and on original ribbon mounted for wear. Ingólfur Arnarson was the first Nordic settler in Iceland, settling at Reykjavík in 874.
The figure on the face is taken from the Statue of Arnarson by the sculptor Einar Jónsson (1874-1954) to be found on the Arnarhóll overlooking Lækjatorg Square in the centre of Reykjavík. The population of Iceland is about 300,000 and the medal is awarded sparingly, making it very hard to find.
