The China Incident War Medal 1931–1934 was instituted on 23 July 1934 by the Empire of Japan to recognize military and civilian personnel who participated in Japanese operations in Manchuria and northern China between 1931 and 1934.

The medal is closely associated with the Mukden Incident of September 1931, which served as the catalyst for Japan’s occupation of Manchuria. It marks the beginning of Japan’s military expansion on the Chinese mainland and was the first of a series of campaign medals awarded for participation in the various “incidents” and military operations conducted by Japan in Asia during the 1930s and 1940s.

Purpose

The medal was a campaign and service award, issued to recognize participation in military operations and service during the period 1931–1934. It was not awarded for individual acts of bravery but rather as official recognition of service rendered during the campaign.

Award Criteria

The medal was awarded to members of the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy who took part in operations in Manchuria and adjacent regions between 1931 and 1934.

It could also be awarded to civilian personnel serving in direct support roles for military operations, including transportation, medical services, administration, communications, and logistics.

Eligibility covered the entire period from the outbreak of hostilities in 1931 until the official conclusion of the campaign in 1934. The award served as a symbol of state recognition for service in the field rather than for specific combat actions.

Description

Bronze medal measuring approximately 30 mm in diameter. The obverse features the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest together with military motifs representing the armed forces of Japan.

The reverse bears an inscription indicating the period “Shōwa 6 – Shōwa 9” (1931–1934), commemorating service during the campaign.

The ribbon incorporates multiple colours representing the Army and Navy and is often fitted with a suspension bar bearing Japanese characters identifying it as the China Incident Campaign Medal.

The medal was typically issued in a dark wooden or lacquered presentation case bearing an inscription identifying the award.

Significance

The China Incident War Medal 1931–1934 was one of Japan’s earliest modern campaign medals and served as a precursor to later decorations awarded for service in China. It reflects Japan’s military expansion into Northeast Asia and the formal recognition granted to those who participated in the occupation and consolidation of Manchuria.
