The China Incident War Medal was instituted by the Empire of Japan on 27 July 1939 by Imperial Decree to recognize military service during the conflict in China that began in 1937. Following the escalation of hostilities between Japan and China into full-scale war, the Japanese government officially referred to the conflict as the “China Incident” rather than a declared war, and this terminology was reflected in the title of the medal.

The decoration was awarded to members of the Imperial Japanese Army and Imperial Japanese Navy who served in operations connected with the campaign in China between 1937 and 1945. It was a campaign and service medal intended to acknowledge participation in the conflict rather than individual acts of bravery or heroism.

Award Criteria

The medal was awarded to military personnel who departed Japan for service in China or in areas connected with military operations during the conflict. Eligibility included participation in military campaigns, occupation duties, logistical support, communications, transportation, medical services, and other forms of wartime service directly connected with operations in China.

The decoration recognized service in the campaign as a whole and was not restricted solely to front-line combat personnel. It served as an official acknowledgment of contribution to Japan’s military efforts in China throughout the duration of the conflict.

Description

Bronze medal measuring approximately 30 mm in diameter. The obverse bears the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest, the symbol of the Japanese Emperor, together with crossed Army and Navy flags representing the cooperation of Japan’s armed forces during the campaign.

The reverse depicts a stylized landscape featuring mountains and waves, accompanied by an inscription identifying the award as the China Incident War Medal.

The ribbon consists of multiple coloured stripes symbolizing the Army, Navy, loyalty, and service to the Empire. Variations in shade may be encountered due to age and manufacture, but the distinctive multicoloured ribbon remains one of the defining features of the award.

The medal was typically issued with an award document and was often presented in a fitted storage box or presentation case.

Significance

The China Incident War Medal represents Japan’s prolonged military involvement in China during the years preceding and overlapping the Second World War. It reflects the official Japanese view of the conflict as an “incident” rather than a formally declared war, illustrating the political language employed by the Japanese government during the period.
