Japan – Order of the Rising Sun, Seventh Class (Blue Paulownia Leaves Medal)

A beautiful example of the Imperial Japanese Order of the Rising Sun, Seventh Class, also known as the Blue Paulownia Leaves Medal, complete with its original black lacquer presentation case. The decoration features the distinctive paulownia leaves and blossoms rendered in vibrant green and violet enamel, suspended from its original white ribbon with red edge stripes.

The Order of the Rising Sun was established by Emperor Meiji in 1875 as Japan’s first national order of merit and was awarded for distinguished military and civil service to the Empire. The Seventh Class was typically bestowed upon junior officials, educators, police officers, and other individuals whose loyal and meritorious service contributed to the administration and development of the Japanese state.

This example remains in excellent condition, with the enamel retaining its rich colours and fine detail. The reverse bears the official Japanese inscription identifying the decoration, while the fitted lacquer case, lined in deep blue silk and velvet, provides an elegant period presentation.

An attractive and historically significant Imperial Japanese decoration, representing one of the lower grades of one of Japan’s most prestigious and enduring orders of merit. Complete examples with their original cases are becoming increasingly difficult to find and remain highly desirable among collectors of Japanese and Asian orders and decorations.
