Description

Japan – Russo-Japanese War Medal (日露戦役従軍記章), 1904–1905

Instituted by Imperial Edict No. 51 on 31 March 1906, the Russo-Japanese War Medal was awarded to members of the Imperial Japanese Army and Navy, as well as certain civilian personnel who participated in or directly supported military operations during the Russo-Japanese War of 1904–1905. Created to commemorate Japan’s victory over the Russian Empire, the medal recognized service in the campaign that established Japan as a major military power and marked the first modern defeat of a European power by an Asian nation.

The obverse displays the Imperial Chrysanthemum Crest above crossed Army and Navy flags, symbolizing the unity of Japan’s armed forces under the Emperor. Surrounding the central design is a wreath of laurel and paulownia branches, traditional emblems of victory, honour, and imperial authority. The medal is suspended from its original ribbon of green, white, blue, yellow, red, yellow, blue, white, and green vertical stripes, representing the combined service of the Imperial Army and Navy.

The reverse bears the inscription 「明治三十七八年戰役」 (“Campaign of Meiji Years 37–38”), referring to the 37th and 38th years of the Meiji era (1904–1905).

The inscription is enclosed within a decorative wreath, emphasizing the medal’s status as an official Imperial Japanese campaign decoration.

Originally issued in a fitted presentation case, complete examples with their original cases are increasingly sought after by collectors, although medals were commonly issued without surviving cases due to wartime use and subsequent loss.

Condition: Extremely Fine; medal retaining an attractive original bronze patina with sharp, well-defined details throughout. The original ribbon remains clean and well preserved, showing only light age-related wear. A fine and historically significant example of one of Imperial Japan’s earliest campaign medals, commemorating the nation’s victory in the Russo-Japanese War.
