Norway – Order of St.Olav, knight II class

Description

The Order was instituted on 21 August 1847 by King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway as a specifically Norwegian order, named for King Olav II (Saint Olav), patron saint of Norway (995-1030, reigned 1015-1028) and to be awarded “for distinguished services rendered to the country and mankind”. 

Silver and white enamel Maltese Cross with ball-tipped finials, with the crowned sypher for Oscar I   in silver between the arms, on jeweled swivel crown suspension. The face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing the gilt Norwegian lion within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings. The reverse with a circular central red enamel medallion inscribed in gilt letters ‘RET OG SANDHED’ (Justice and Truth) within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings. On a Danish ribbon mode of wear. This is the 1937 type.
