Description
The Order was instituted on 21 August 1847 by King Oscar I of Sweden and Norway as a specifically Norwegian order, named for King Olav II (Saint Olav), patron saint of Norway (995-1030, reigned 1015-1028) and to be awarded “for distinguished services rendered to the country and mankind”.
Silver and white enamel Maltese Cross with ball-tipped finials, with the crowned sypher for Oscar I in silver between the arms, on jeweled swivel crown suspension. The face with a circular central red enamel medallion bearing the gilt Norwegian lion within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings. The reverse with a circular central red enamel medallion inscribed in gilt letters ‘RET OG SANDHED’ (Justice and Truth) within white, blue and white concentric enamel rings.
The Order is on the traditional Norwegian ribbon mode of wear, with a button hole rosette in the colours of the Order of St Olav. This is the 1937 type.
