ROMANIA – 25th Anniversary of the Proclamation of the Republic Medal, 1947–1972
(Medalia „25 de ani de la proclamarea Republicii”)
Instituted on 14 October 1972 by Decree No. 391 of the Romanian State Council, this official commemorative medal marked the twenty-fifth anniversary of the abolition of the Romanian monarchy and the proclamation of the Romanian People’s Republic on 30 December 1947. By 1972, the country was officially known as the Socialist Republic of Romania under Nicolae Ceaușescu. The medal was published in Buletinul Oficial No. 111.
It was awarded to workers, engineers, technicians, agricultural personnel, farmers, scientists, artists, writers, military personnel and others whose political activity or professional work was considered to have contributed to the establishment and development of socialist Romania. It was therefore both a jubilee decoration and an instrument of official state recognition. Contemporary statutes appear to describe it as a single-class award, although some modern dealers catalogue silvered and differently finished variants as first and second classes.
The obverse displays the outline of Romania surrounded by laurel branches and radiating lines, with the number “25” at the centre. Below are coloured representations of the red socialist flag and the Romanian national tricolour. The surrounding inscription “DE LA PROCLAMAREA REPUBLICII” translates as “Since the Proclamation of the Republic.”
The reverse shows the flag of the Socialist Republic of Romania bearing the state coat of arms, placed against a radiating background. The medal is generally recorded as silvered tombac or a similar base-metal alloy, measuring approximately 35 mm in diameter and weighing around 24.7 grams.
The ribbon incorporates the Romanian national colours, with a broad red central section, yellow fields, narrow red and blue stripes and white outer edges. A silver-coloured ribbon device bears the socialist state emblem between foliage and the dates “1947–1972,” divided by a five-pointed star. The accompanying miniature ribbon bar allowed the award to be represented when the full medal was not worn.
Condition: Fine; medal retains substantial original silvered finish with age-related toning, light scratches and surface wear. Coloured flag details remain visible with minor loss. Ribbon is complete and retains strong colours, with light wear and fraying consistent with age. Applied ribbon emblem, suspension fitting and rear pin assembly intact. Separate matching ribbon bar included.
