Sweden – King Gustaf V’s 90th Birthday Commemorative Decoration

The Decoration was instituted on 21 May 1948 and just 770 examples were awarded on the Kings 90th birthday on 16 June 1948 to members of the Royal family, those who had been in their service, persons employed in the royal palaces and leading supporters of the royal charitable foundation. The Decoration was designed by the silversmith Erik Fleming and produced by C.C. Sporrong & Co. of Stockholm. Silver-gilt decoration in the oval form of the crowned cipher of King Gustaf V within a stylised palm wreath with ring to the reverse of the crown for ribbon suspension; the face plain gilt. The reverse matt, dated “1858 16/6 1948” on the reverse of the crown and with C.C. Sporrong & Co. maker’s marks and silver hallmarks for 1948 at the base.

On original bow ribbon of the Order of the Seraphim mounted for wear and in original pasteboard case of issue with C.C. Sporrong & Co. maker’s mark on the inside of the lid. This badge comes with the award paper of the recipient, in this case to Miss Signe Johanna Sjokvist who was the manager for the laundry at the palace. Whit the lot comes also a personal letter from Prince Carl and his wife, princess Ingeborg who congratulates her on the bestowal of the decoration and adding a monetary gift of 100kr.

Price Carl was brother to King Gustav V and he was father to Queen Astrid of Belgium and crown princess Martha of Norway.
