SWEDEN – Group of King Oscar II Commemorative Badges and Stickpins, c. 1897
(Oscar II:s jubileumsmärken / Kungliga monogramnålar, 1872–1897)

This group comprises four Swedish royal commemorative pieces associated with King Oscar II and, in particular, the twenty-fifth anniversary of his accession in 1897. Oscar II became King of Sweden and Norway in 1872 and remained King of Sweden until 1907; the personal union with Norway ended in 1905. His silver jubilee was celebrated in Stockholm in September 1897.

The principal piece is a finely enamelled brooch displaying Oscar II’s crowned royal monogram between the crossed union flags of Sweden and Norway. A scroll below bears the dates “1872–1897,” marking twenty-five years of his reign. The flags incorporate the historic Swedish–Norwegian union device, reflecting the shared monarchy that existed when the badge was produced. The design combines blue, yellow, red and white enamel with a silvered or gilt base-metal setting.

The group also contains two long stickpins. The larger features Oscar II’s elaborate crowned monogram, while the smaller presents a more stylized royal cypher surrounded by laurel foliage. Such pins were worn as discreet expressions of royal loyalty and were popular accessories during jubilees, public celebrations and other patriotic occasions.

The circular portrait piece bears a facing bust of the king surrounded by the inscription “OSCAR II SVERIGES NORGES KONUNG,” meaning “Oscar II, King of Sweden and Norway.” Similar portrait medals and souvenirs were produced for royal anniversaries, exhibitions and public events throughout his reign. Museum collections record numerous privately issued Oscar II commemorative medals, including examples specifically created for the 1897 jubilee.

These pieces should not be confused with Oscar II’s official 1897 Royal Jubilee Badge, which was awarded in limited numbers to members of the Royal Household, liveried servants and selected Norwegian recipients. The present items are more appropriately classified as commercially produced royal souvenirs, patriotic jewellery and commemorative insignia.

Condition: Fine to Very Fine overall; enamelled jubilee badge retains strong colours with minor surface wear and small areas of enamel loss; crown, monogram, flags and dates remain clearly defined. Stickpins are intact with age-related toning, oxidation and light distortion to the shafts. Portrait piece shows attractive patina, scratches and handling wear.
