Description

Instituted by King Frederick I on 23 February 1748. It is the highest of the Swedish orders and only bestowed upon members of the royal family and other heads of state, could also be awarded to prominent citizens.   

Of fine early manufacture and quality, consisting of a large Maltese cross with ball finials, each arm featuring hand filed diamond facets between rays, with separately affixed winged seraphs in each quadrant, with a silver patriarchal cross overlaid on each arm, obverse center presenting large blue enameled field on gold with a white enameled “IHS” representing the order motto in latin; “Iesus Hominum Salvator”, with three gold Swedish crowns and three white enameled nails representing the nails with which Jesus Christ was crucified.  The reverse has a large pin but the pin hook is missing. Pleasingly toned silver, with very minor enamel loss on the upper side of the enameled globe.
