Description
The order was established by Legislative Decree No. 166 of 4 July 1953. It is Syria’s highest purely military decoration and awarded for exceptional military bravery or leadership on the battlefield or for other services in the defence of the state. Military recipients must hold the rank of captain or above to qualify for the award and all recipients are initially admitted into the IV Class before promotion into higher Classes.
Foreigners, as well as institutions who have contributed to the defence of the state, may also be eligible for the award of the Order. In exceptional cases, the order may be presented to foreign nationals and the highest class has been frequently awarded to foreign chiefs of staff. This award has also been referred to as the “Military Honor Medal” or the “Order of the Legion of Honor”. The grand cross star is made by Bertrand, Paris, France.
